I grew up playing office on my Oma's typewriter. Oma (that's Dutch for Grandma) was proofreader and editor at the San Diego Union Tribune for twenty years, and my father is an editor too. Raised by wordsmiths and drilled in word games, grammar lessons, and spelling tests, I grew up to have the sharp Billuni editor's eye.
An English major, I earned my bachelor's degree at Willamette University. In my twenties, I ran a media watchdog agency, a circus, and an AIDS services center, but my real talent in each of these roles was managing communications: writing and editing press releases, marketing plans, newsletters, and grants.
My work for noble causes brought me to San Francisco, where I took advantage of the late '90s economic boom, working as a freelance editor and "girl Friday" for dot-com businesses. When the boom imploded, I began editing novels and found the career that makes my heart sing.
